Tenor and soprano saxophonist Yuri Honing sinks his teeth in the ‘vocals’ of Schubert’s Winterreise. Without making any concessions, Honing presents the famous songs, omitting the lyrics of Wilhelm Müller, by playing the melodies without any additions in virtuoso ensemble playing with pianist Nora Mulder. Honing is reputed as one of Holland’s leading jazz musicians, who integrates both pop and world music in his work; Mulder is specialized in contemporary composed music. And that makes the Schubert adventure of these two wilful musicians’ all the more surprising. |
A special project For me Schubert’s Winterreise, the icon of the classical vocal repertoire, in the first place is a songbook to be compared with for example the American Songbook. It was a challenge to give the performance a strong personal signature without the use of improvisation and still respecting Schubert’s work at the same time. I think that this approach proves to be effective and that Nora and I have even made the repertoire more accessible. (Yuri Honing) |
Can a jazz cat play Schubert? Yes, when he’s able to produce a sonorous tone on his tenor sax such as Yuri Honing does Breathtaking Liberating..... to listen to just the bare melodies of these emotional songs is an extraordinary experience A well thought-out musical concept..... a perfect success, not only because this new combination has brought forth completely original dynamics, but also because Schubert’s musical poetry remains untouched Honing proves it can be done, very well in fact
